In 1976, when the City of La Habra formed the Cultural Arts Council, the city did not have a community performing arts facility.  That was soon rectified.

The first performance by the La Habra Community Theatre was a Children’s Theatre project; Twelfth Night by Shakespeare.  Without a performing arts facility this first play was in La Habra High School’s lecture hall.

By 1977, in an effort to revitalize downtown La Habra, the Mayor of La Habra, the City Council, and community members restored a 1909 Pacific Electric Depot (train station) building as the jewel for a community performing arts facility, The Depot Playhouse.  This restoration was mainly funded by the Federal Government Restoration of Historical Landmarks; Orange County Historical Landmark #14.  The Depot was moved to Portola Park and began its new career.

In 1980, Cultural Arts Council included the La Habra Community Theatre; which consisted of 100 members by the time the group moved to the Depot Playhouse in 1982.  The musical Oklahoma was the first play performed in the restored building; boxcars are used as dressing rooms for the artist.

“On August 15, 1995 the Depot Playhouse became a non-profit tax-exempt organization and officially became known as Depot Theatre of La Habra. The theatre’s board of directors and all production committees are comprised of community volunteers. The Depot Theatre is one of the few community organizations which functions without a single paid staff member.”
