Pet Safety Tips for the Holiday Season!

by The Domis Team

Keep your pet's holiday season as merry and bright for them as it is for the rest of your family! This time of year can introduce a whole new multitude of hazards that put their safety in jeopardy. Follow these tips for a happy and healthy pet this joyous time of year!

  • A tree is an intriguing new thing for your animal to explore. Deter them from it by using naturally based deterrents around its base.
  • You can also keep your tree and, more importantly, your pet safe by not hanging any ornaments that are made from edible materials. These can too easily attract your pet.
  • Poinsettias are incredibly toxic for animals. Use a natural deterrent on them as well, or better yet, decorate with silk ones instead.
  • Plants aren't the only potentially toxic things found during the holidays. Many of the foods we enjoy, such as garlic, onions, grapes, and chocolate, are unsafe for our pets. In addition, keep your animals away from the table to avoid them swallowing bones, plastic utensils, or other items that can get stuck in their digestive tract.
  • Keep all alcohol away from your pets. Injestion of alcohol can have very serious health effects on animals.
  • Eliminate fire hazards but keep the ambiance by using flameless candles.
  • Hide cords or spray your natural deterrent on them as these can often be interesting "chew toys" for your pets.
  • Create a private and quiet space for your animal to be during large gatherings. Give them toys and treats to keep them occupied. This way you always know that your pet is still in the house and they often appreciate avoiding the hustle and bustle that comes with these events. If you would rather your pet stay with you, make sure someone responsible keeps on eye on them at all times.

Steps to Get Your Home Ready for Thanksgiving!

by The Domis Team

Hosting next week's big feast? Do not panic! Although having house guests during Thanksgiving can seem stressful, there are simple steps your can take to prepare your home for the holidays. These steps will help get your home ready and ensure that you and your guests stay comfortable throughout the holiday weekend!

  1. Keep it Lit

Although you can walk through your home in the pitch black, your guests cannot navigate it that well. Help ensure they can safely walk around the house at all hours of the day by putting night lights in bathrooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Also, check to see if all outside lights are operating correctly so guests can safely make it to your front door.

  1. Remove Clutter

Go through declutter all public areas (i.e. kitchen, living room, foyer, and dining room) and guest rooms. Make sure that all counter tops and tables are cleared off. Store the unnecessary items in the basement or storage closets until after your guests have left.

  1. Clear Out the Foyer

Give your guests a great first impression by preparing your home's foyer. Protect your floors from the additional foot traffic by placing a mat in the area. Remove your shoes and personal items and add hooks for guests to hang their coats. Add a bench so guests can easily remove their shoes.

  1. Prepare Your Kitchen

The kitchen is going to be the busiest room in your house on Thanksgiving day. Clear out all unnecessary appliances and utensils so you can easily find the essentials. Place the coffee machine in another common room to create more space. Make sure that there is seating available in your kitchen so guests can visit with you while you prepare the feast.

  1. Keep the Bathroom Stocked

Make sure your bathroom is fully stocked with all essentials you guests might need, such as toilet paper, toiletries, and towels. Keep these items easily accessible in the open on shelves or in baskets. Add a bath mat to the tub for safety.

  1. Add Comfort for Sleeping

Ensure that your guests will sleep soundly by supplying ample pillows and blankets for your guests. Change out the light fixture in your guest bedroom to a ceiling fan so your guest can more easily control the temperature while they sleep.

We wish all of our clients and their families a very happy Thanksgiving!
