Pool Safety Tips for A Summer of Fun!

by The Domis Team

Enjoy fun in the California sun splashing around in your backyard POOL this summer!! It is the perfect way to cool off in the Greater Los Angeles Area. However, please always remember that home owners need to be responsible about the safety and maintenance of the pool, not only for themselves and their families but for others in the neighborhood.

1. Pools should only be used when there is a responsible adult present. However, you cannot always be home and guarantee that no one will enter the pool when they shouldn't. This is why it is important to Safeguard Access. The first step is to add a pool barrier. Each city in our area has a specific pool fence law so be sure to find out yours in order to ensure that you are in compliance. Also consider covering the pool when it is not in use to further ensure that no one can fall in. A pool alarm is another smart safety measure. These special alarms emit a loud noise when someone enters the water itself or the pool area in general.

2. Keep your pool and the deck area in top working condition by making sure it is Up To Code. This will help protect your health and safety when you use the pool. You can find a certified pool inspector through the National Swimming Pool Foundation or the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals to help you complete this process.

3. Pool maintenance requires the use of dangerous chemicals. Always Use With Caution. Safety goggles and gloves should be worn when using the chemicals. They also should not be used if they are over a year old. Make sure to safely store the chemicals when they are not in use. They should not be kept near other hazardous materials and need to be away from AC and heating units. Always store them in a well-ventilated area.

4. Keep pool toys Off Deck when not in use. Toys can be tripping hazards when left out on the deck. They also can be an added enticement for children to dive in the pool. Find a safe place to store them to remove the temptation.

5. Always be prepared for an emergency by Having Safety Equipment On Hand. There should be a ring buoy or crook rescue hook near your pool at all times. It is also a good idea to give life jackets to small children or weak swimmers to keep them safe in the pool.

Tips for A Successful Garage Sale!

by The Domis Team

Whether you are looking to Sell your Whittier Area or simply ready for some serious decluttering, now is the perfect time for a garage sale. A garage sale will allow you to get rid of unwanted items and put cash in your pocket! Here are some tips for having a successful garage sale for your home!

This is the most important thing you will do for your garage sale. The only way to ensure customers is if they know about it. There are many resources your can use to advertise for your sale and it is a good strategy to use several of them to get the most word out:

  • Ads in local papers
  • Clear, legible signs placed at busy intersections and heading to your home
  • Online postings on Craigslist, Facebook, etc.

Now you need to make sure you have the merchandise to sell to your customers. Start collecting items that you have considered donating or throwing away. Decide how you want to lay out the items during the sale. One strategy is to group items together that are related. This makes it easy for buyers to locate things they are interested in. Another strategy is to organize by size. If you use this method, keep the larger, more expensive items towards the back so buyers need to walk past everything else to get to the big ticket items, allowing for the opportunity that something might catch their eye along the way.

Pricing will be important for your sale. In general, a good rule of thumb is to price items for a third of what you paid for them originally. Remain flexible though and try to price appropriately and in a manner that will encourage sales. There are several methods you can use for pricing. You can individually price everything. If you do this, make sure that prices are clearly displayed and use larger tags for big ticket items that allow you room for descriptions as well as price. If you do not want to spend time placing price stickers on everything, you can also group price. For cheaper items, consider grouping similar items together in a box and asking for the same price for each item within that box. Or, you can sell all the contents within an entire box together for a price. However you decide to price, always be willing to make a deal with your customers. On the last day of your sale, consider lowering the prices in order to move all of your remaining items.

Working your garage sale, whether it is a single day or an entire weekend requires a lot of time and energy. Make sure you remain well fed and hydrated throughout the day and have a place where you can get off your feet during slower times. You will have the most success if you open early and close late, in order to cater to everyone's schedule. Make sure you get an ample amount of change, including small and large bills, before the sale starts. And, always protect your money by having it on you at all times! Grab a fanny pack or pocketed apron to keep your money in. Great everyone with a smile and be friendly throughout their time at your sale. After the sale, donate any items that did not sell and take down all signs from the neighborhood.

Celebrate Memorial Day in the Greater Whittier Area!

by The Domis Team

Memorial Day Weekend is here! This unofficial start of summer will be filled with family gatherings, delicious BBQs, and outdoor recreational activities. In between all of the fun that the long weekend holds, it is important to remember the true reason for the holiday. Memorial Day serves as a reminder of all the sacrifices that the brave men and women of our armed forces make everyday to protect us and our great country. Spend time this weekend thanking and honoring the United States veterans and current military service men and women for their efforts. Celebrate the holiday by checking out the numerous remembrance events taking place throughout the greater Whittier area this weekend.

There are two fantastic community events taking place in Whittier to commemorate the holiday. Join the Whittier City Council for their 2018 Memorial Day Program. The event takes place from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, May 28th, at the Whittier City Hall Peace Memorial (13230 Penn Street). Light refreshments will be served. Afterwards, head over to Rose Hills Memorial Park (3888 Workman Mill Road) at 11:00 am for the 98th Annual Memorial Day Observance. This event features on Monday at 11:00 am. Head to Rose Hills Memorial Park (3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier) to see Remembrance trees, a keynote address by Colonel Michael L. Herman (California State Military Reserve), a vintage plane fly over, and military vehicle display.

Downey will also be celebrating the holiday during their 6th Annual Memorial Day Street Festival. On Monday, May 28th, from noon to 10:00 pm, find a multitude of great holiday activities for the whole family to enjoy. Head over to Bastards American Canteen (11045 Downey Avenue) for live musical performances, beer garden, veteran vendors, Memorial Day TAPS ceremony, Marine Corps vehicle display, Save The Brave annual clothing drive for homeless veterans, and so much more.
