As You Prepare for the Holidays, What About the Others?

by The Domis Team

food, bag, donateAs the holidays near in Southern California, the area is ablaze in lights, shoppers flock to area malls, and the upcoming weeks are filled with productions of favorite holiday classics. If you soak in the festive atmosphere, spend some quality family time, and don't let holiday stress overwhelm you, you can make a great holiday for yourself and your family. But what about the others? Many people among us have not had a prosperous year and need help.

Unfortunately, the economy has made it more difficult for many people to be as generous as in years past; donations even among wealthy Orange County households are down 35% over last year.  This was quite apparent at Thanksgiving, when the Orange County Rescue Mission received 3,009 pounds of food at the last minute but only had $1,100 of the  $5,000 cost of its annual Thanksgiving day dinner. Sunwest Bank of Tustin generously donated the entire amount of the dinner, which enabled the mission to feed 400 people.  With Christmas in sight, the mission and many of the other charitable organizations are hoping for a holiday miracle so they can again feed the hungry, not just on the holiday but throughout the year. (Click here to learn how to help the Orange County Rescue Mission.)

The state of affair at the mission addresses a common plight.  Though holiday giving is a wonderful way to celebrate the real spirit of the season, many organizations need monetary donations as well as volunteer help throughout the year.  The holidays offer a good opportunity to start a habit of giving that you can continue into the new year, even as a family activity.

If you are looking for a way to get started, here are some opportunities near Whittier to offer service:

•·         The Salvation Army, noted for its red kettles at Christmas, needs volunteers to man the kettles at  grocery stores and retail stores around the area, even for a few hours. You can also participate in The Angel Tree program and buy toys and food for a particular child, or adopt a family by providing food, clothing, and gift certificates. The Army happily accept donations of toys, food, and clothes but can also use help sorting and packing the donated items. Check out ways to help the Salvation Army here.

•·         If working to alleviate hunger is your passion, the Orange County Food Bank, in addition to the other organizations named here, will accept your donations of fresh or canned food, as well as money.  If you shop at Henry's Farmers Market, you can "Grab and Give" by buying an extra bag of food and drop it in the donation bins near the exits. You can donate to or even organize a food drive, pack food boxes, or adopt a family.  Want to donate online or even organize an online food drive?  It is easy to do any of these things through the Orange County Food Bank.

•·         Have administrative or phone skills? Have professional time to offer? OneOC (formerly the Volunteer Center Orange County) has amassed volunteer opportunities for the holidays and throughout the year in the useful OneOC directory. Whether you want to help children, military families, the arts, education, abuse victims, or serve other needs, an OneOC organization awaits your call or email.

•·         If you can't get out, you can cheer up military service member by sending cards. The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes are sponsoring an effort to collect one million greeting cards.  If you want to help, you can send cards with a cheery message in batches of up to 15 in one large envelope (50 for a school class or other group) to Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD, 20791-5456.  You can even work with your kids to make the cards -  please don't use glitter though, as this can get in the wounds of healing soldiers. This effort is for cards only- no money or gifts. Read all details about Holiday Mail for Heroes here.

Even if your family has been affected by the economy this year, or even if you work every spare moment to make it, there is something you can do to help others enjoy the holiday.  If you start out by contributing your time or money to one of these organizations, you can not only alleviate the suffering of others, but add a new dimension to your life if you add regular volunteering to the mix.
