It’s hard to believe the holidays kick off next week with Thanksgiving!  There’s a growing anticipation of the season here in Whittier and the surrounding areas as decorations are being put up and holiday festivities give a boost of seasonal cheer.  For those of you who currently live in Whittier, La Habra or La Mirada, you may be getting your home ready to host family and friends.

As you may already know, About Whittier and its nearby communities are committed to caring for and preserving our beautiful surroundings through various programs and events throughout they year.  It’s no doubt a busy season, but amidst the hustle and bustle, there are still things we can all be doing to care for our environment!

If you are planning to host a holiday dinner this season, here are just a few simple things you can do to make it an eco-friendly one!  You’ll not only enjoy time with family and friends, but will feel good about being “green” in the process!

1. Switch to Convection- Now, we don’t expect that you’ll run out and buy a new oven before your holiday party, but this is something to consider for the very near future!  Switch from a conventional oven to a convection oven.  The difference?  A convection oven continually circulates heated air, which means food cooks more quickly and reduces energy usage by 20%!  Imagine being able to prepare food faster and save on energy- all from one appliance!

2. Cloth Napkins- These “things of the past” are making a comeback!  The average American will use around 2,200 paper napkins per year- which are never recycled!  Using cloth napkins will cut down drastically on waste and will make any event feel more special.

3. Buy Local- Shopping locally from farmers and other various growers for ingredients for your holiday party (or any time!) is a great way to cut down on our carbon footprint as well as help support sustainable growing in the Whittier community and surrounding areas.

4. Reusable Towels- When cleaning up after your holiday party; be sure to use reusable towels instead of paper towels.  Microfiber towels will hold on to dust, dirt and food particles since the fibers act like a magnet.  After cleanup, throw them in the wash and you’ll be able to reuse them over and over!

5. Nix the Microwave- As much as possible, reheat or cook items in the oven or on the stove.  Certain plastics can produce harmful fumes when put in the microwave and, while not overtly harmful, microwaves do leak radiation.  It’s just better for your health and for the environment to use other options as often as you can!

6. Glass Containers- Storing leftovers or dried foods in glass containers with lids are much safer than the plastic alternative.  When heated, certain plastics can break down and put chemicals into your food.  Learn more about harmful and safe plastics.

7. Chill Out- Be sure to put a pitcher of water in your fridge at least an hour before your party to ensure it’s completely chilled.  Those that prefer water won’t have to stand at your sink and let the water run until it gets cold.  The average kitchen faucet flows at a gallon per minute!  Thinking ahead can help to chill water before will reduce the waste that a running faucet will produce!

8. No-Cook Dishes- Save energy and give your oven a rest by preparing dishes that don’t have to be cooked. Think: salads, fruit dishes, veggie dips, yogurts and much more!  You’ll find yourself being more creative and spending less time in the kitchen!

9. Fill the Dishwasher- To avoid wasting water and energy, be sure to have a full load each time you use your dishwasher.  Surprisingly, new energy efficient dishwasher can be more eco-friendly than washing dishes by hand!  Be sure to air dry and skip the pre-rinse cycle as most newer models are effective enough to get your dishes clean without the added step!

As a team of Whittier Real Estate agents, The Domis Team is committed to our clients from the very first meeting to providing them with great advice and insight into getting the most out of their home and lifestyle here in Whittier!  We hope today’s tips have inspired you to take an eco-friendly approach to the holidays in your Whittier home!

5 Benefits of Buying a Whittier Home During the Holidays

by The Domis Team

Last week, we talked about tips for helping to sell your Whittier home during the holiday season.  But, what if you’re in the market to buy a home right now?  Don’t fret!

As Whittier Real Estate agents here on The Domis Team, we know you’re probably wondering if it’s even worth starting your home search during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. If you find yourself on a strict deadline, waiting until the busier spring market may not be an option, however there is an upside to buying a home this time of year!

Here are five great reasons to begin your Whittier home search now!

1. Lower Prices- With the lack of people searching during the holidays for a home in Whittier and the surrounding areas; prices soften a bit. You can view a list of current homes for sale in Whittier right here on our website!

2. Less Competition- Many buyers don’t think to take advantage of house hunting during the holidays, so you’re sure to avoid any bidding wars that would occur at a peak point on the Whittier Real Estate market. This will mean a less stressful home buying experience for you!

3. Motivated Sellers- Sellers dread not being able to sell their homes before the holidays get under way. They’re very aware that most are not in the market to buy a home until Spring rolls around, which means; they’re motivated. They know showings of their home will greatly decrease, so any activity on their home is good news. Oftentimes they’re willing to come down on the price or be flexible with closing dates, and other extras.

4. Favorable Mortgage Terms- Mortgage lenders may be willing to lower interest rates or let go of some of their fees in order to gain your business. With fewer people shopping for homes; they will be experiencing a slower time in their business as well. Be sure to shop around to get the best possible deal. Your Whittier Real Estate agent will help point you in the right direction.

5. Tax Deduction- Closing before the end of the year can mean you are eligible to deduct the interest component of your first monthly mortgage payment from your taxable income for this year. You may also be able to deduct any money you pay for points to reduce your interest rate. Of course you’ll want to consult with a Whittier tax advisor tax advisor to talk over the full details.

As you can see, there are some benefits of buying a Whittier home this holiday season!  While it can seem daunting to begin your home search, our team of experienced Whittier Real Estate agents are here to help!  We would be happy to walk with you through each step of the home buying process and help you be settled in your home before the end of the year!

Tips for Selling Your Whittier Home During the Holidays!

by The Domis Team

Selling your Whittier home during the holiday season may seem impossible, but it’s not!  In fact, you can use the festive season to boost your homes’ appeal to interested buyers!

In working in the Whittier Real Estate market for a number of years, our team of experienced real estate agents here on The Domis Team understand the questions that can come with trying to sell your home.  It can be nerve wracking to wonder how buyers will view your home and, if there will even be interested buyers this time of year!

However, our experience tells us that buyers who are actively searching during the holidays are serious about buying.  This can be encouraging as we enter the busy holiday season!  If you’re wondering what you can do to help your home sell before the end of the year, below are five great tips that will help your home stand out from the competition.

1. Create Beautiful Curb Appeal- As we get more into the fall season, lawns and trees can begin to look drab.  Summer flowers are long gone and creating an eye catching home from the curb can be more of a challenge.  To make a solid first impression, you’ll want to keep debris off the driveway and sidewalk.  Add a simple  holiday wreath and maybe a few pots with brightly colored mums, or a poinsettia as we near Christmas, to your front porch.  Also, don’t neglect your home.  Be sure to power wash or touch up paint before you begin showing your Whittier home.

2. Don’t Overdo It- It can be easy to want to over decorate your home with holiday themed decorations.  However, if a buyer walks into your home and can only see Thanksgiving or Christmas decor; it will immediately take away from the focus on your home.  Adding a few simple touches here and there will be enough to enhance your space without overpowering it.

3. Make Comfort a High Priority- As we near the holidays, you want people to feel instantly cozy when they come into your home.  Keep the thermostat at a comfortable temperature, put out a few unlit holiday scented candles, and have a fire in your fireplace.  Continue to help buyers envision themselves enjoying fall and winter days by having a cozy throw on your couch and even a table with hot chocolate, cider and holiday treats.  This will help your home stand out in a buyers mind as you appeal to all their senses!

4. Lighten Up Your Home- With the sun setting earlier, you’ll want to showcase your home in the best light.  If you host open houses earlier in the day, be sure to have curtains open to let in the natural light and keep your home feeling bright and airy.  If you’re showing your home in the later afternoon or evening, you’ll want to have warm light bulbs in every lamp and have as many lights on as possible.  A dark home can feel dreary and buyers will have a hard time seeing all the great features of your home.

5. Don’t Stop on the First Floor- As you create a warm and welcoming environment in your home this holiday season, don’t forget to carry that feeling throughout your entire home.  Make sure bedrooms look fresh and clean by switching out an old comforter for a new fall or winter one,  or add a few accent pillows to enhance the feeling of your bedroom being pulled together.  Each room throughout the home should be clean, free from clutter and feel as welcoming as possible.

Taking these tips to heart and making necessary changes to your home can change how buyers view your Whittier home!  They may seem like small adjustments, but every little bit helps and buyers will notice your attention to detail and the ways in which you care for and maintain your home.
